The Theory of James Baker

James Baker stated that music videos will contain mediation, he also states that mediation works in three ways:

1. Selection: No matter what ends up being on the screen or in the paper, much more will have been left out.

2. Organisation: The various elements within the select media type will be organised in ways that real life is not.

3. Focusing: Mediation always ends up with us (the audience) being encouraged towards concentrating on one aspect of the text while ignoring others.

Mediation applies to my work with me being the editor of my video, as I get to decide which shots make it into the final product and which shots do not, therefore controlling which elements the audience see and what they should focus on.

Video Editing

Rough Cut 1:

To edit my footage and create my rough cut I used the editing software Sony Vegas, within the software I can cut up segments of video, add special effects such as lens flares or filters and over lap footage.

(See full sized image here)

The image above shows the raw footage files (top left), the preview video (top right) and the editing timeline (bottom). When dragged onto the timeline I can manipulate the footage by cutting it up and placing it at certain timeframes that make it fit the song better. For example, I made use of both the slow motion feature and the fade feature during my time editing:

In the top image, the zigzagged lines between the images are used to represent the speed of the footage. The fact that they are stretched out is used to show that the footage has been edited into slow motion. In the bottom image the blue curved line represents when the fade out will begin and how quickly it will end. I chose to have it start half way through the footage so that none of the video was cut off, as the fade out effect causes the footage to pause on whatever frame it begins on.

Rough Cut 1

In this rough cut I show off the beginning of my music video, toying with different effects such as slow motion and using a fade out. I also practice with incorporating a thought beat within the editing.
