The Theory of Julian McDougall

Julian McDougall suggests that in the online age it is getting more difficult to conceive a media audience as a stable, identifiable group. This is due to to the fact that we are now exposed to far more genres of music online than in the past. Despite this however, audiences still clearly make sense and give meaning to cultural products.

McQuail stated in 1972 that "an audience can be described as a 'temporary collective'". Some key terms include mass, niche & mainstream and alternative audiences.

The audience that I am catering to would be considered as being an alternative audience, as the band's main genre of music is a mashup of synthpop and new wave, both of which are not popular enough to be considered mainstream/mass, but not obscure enough to be considered niche.
